Happy Valentines Day! I am sure you are having a great time in the Snow. Our School #GHES is covered in snow! Very cool.
As the snow blows on I expect that all our poems for this week will be done by Tuesday. These are FINAL DRAFTS. I also expect to see the rough drafts. Please implore the skills we have learned about figurative language. This is not an activity to be done hastily, but with much thought and care to the word choice. Remember we are creating a picture with words. This week we began our figurative language unit. This is a very important part of our ELA learning. We focus on being descriptive. In the words of Jack from Love That Dog “making a picture with words.” Learners were given an assignment on Monday to write a draft, edit, and revise three poems with a heavy focus on being descriptive, creative, and taking time to write. (Click on image above to download PDF if needed)
Your learner should already have written a rough draft of their FREE VERSE poem, they now need to revise and edit it (simile and metaphors should be used). When they believe it is ready they need to type it in their Google Docs district account. [How to log into Google Apps Account.] Learners also need to write and complete their “The Red Wheelbarrow” and their “The Tiger” poem. Both these poems are “short” but require learners to think and be creative. I would “like” these type in Google Docs, but if your learner prefers they can write their final in their best writing. I expect to see a ROUGH DRAFT w/ REVISIONS when these are turned in. I have seen some really deep, thoughtful, and powerful descriptive words written when learners take their time and write seriously though these poems. So to recap or to make a list of what learner need to be working on during Snowmageddon 2014 DAY 2:
I fully “suspect” we will not be meeting as a class again until Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Thank you for your continued support. It looks like some exciting weather ahead for the rest of this week. Although we can predict the future, we do know your learner has the day off from attending school today due to inclement weather. But this doesn’t mean they have to check out of learning. I spoke with all learners that there were expectation ahead if school was canceled, and we planned accordingly.
First, my website (http://legacyc109.weebly.com) is a place for both parent and child to keep up with what is happening in the classroom. I have been posting daily reflections on class and assignments in our class blog (C109 Connections), I have uploaded files for parents to help their learner with projects and homework, and a section for learners to access the many online resources we use. There is even a calendar of events and assignments to help us all stay vigilant in succeeding in 5th Grade. eStudies Weekly

It was a great day of Snow falling all day. It was a new experience for the students to enjoy school and watch the snow fall. As the snow came down we focused hard on the beginnings of our Figurative Language Unit. Learners read more of our current novel "Love That Dog" and got explore how Jack (the main character in the novel) got his dog. We laughed at the insights and cried a little too. Learners also spent time creating their Figurative Language Lapbooks. They should have these at home, ask to have them share it with you.
We focused on the ELA portion of class today because this is very important work to your child's success and continual growth as a student in 5th Grade. As writers we need to build a picture with words, and this unit helps your learner accomplish that. Have a safe night enjoying the snow! WOW! Today we started are Figurative Language Unit in both reading and writing, and I am so amazed at the creativity of our learners!
We read the first part of Love That Dog and explore parts of figurative language and poetry. Learners began their first piece of poetry too. The depth and awareness of their Free Verse poems was completely awesome! I am in deep anticipation as they begin to revise and edit their poems. I am a very proud teacher. Just a friendly reminder that your learner should be working on their Black History Month Project. Please plan accordingly. The project is due March 4, 2014. To get the stelar grade your learner can earn they will need to plan ahead. All materials have been sent home and every student should know who they are doing their black history month project on. Looking forward to some great presentations!
Files can be found in our Class Documents Page online: http://legacyc109.weebly.com/class-documents.html We will have a small treat and valentine exchange on Friday, February 14 from 1:00-1:35 in our FIRST BLOCK classroom.
