![]() What a day! Most learners really worked hard to help beat last years AR record during our Read the Most Coast to Coast challenge. Learners read books and focused on the Figurative Language aspects of books. I am looking forward to debriefing with them on Monday! Enjoy the Weekend!

![]() We had some interesting conversations about the "Red Scare" during our Social Studies conversations today. Learners were fascinated to learn about the U.S.S.R. as "scaring" the US.
Learners continue to create great Figurative Language poems and stretching themselves to grow as readers and writers. I continue to be impressed by the way the Learners are reaching to achieve their goals! Continue to encourage them to strecthc themsevles in rea ![]() We started reading "Hate That Cat" by Sharon Creech this week in class. We are continuing our focus on figurative language and zeroing in on alliteration and onomatopoeia. Learners have continued to do a great job of expressing themselves using figurative language in poetry. We will begin to make the shift to use this DESCRIPTIVE writing in prose writing as well.
The Cold War is going to be our focused area in Social Studies for the next few weeks. We begin with understanding the difference between Communism and Democracy as the root of the Cold War. ![]() The district no longer sends home "Progress Reports" to elementary school parents, but we are at "that point" in the grading period. Please take time this weekend to log into Power School and check on the recorded progress of your learner. Please also take a moment and read the comments and notifications with particular grades. I personally feel the "power" of Power School is the COMMUNICATION piece (the comments and notifications). I do the best of my ability to communicate through Power School as to success and needs of your learner. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email. Thank you! ![]() It was another successful day in class C109. EXCEPT.... I forgot to give the vocabulary quiz (sorry). We will take it on Monday.
Learners took the Kahoots! they created yesterday and played them with Mr. Rohrings class. It was an opportunity for them to take something they created and present it to another class. We completed our 3 poems for the week and turned in our Figurative Language folders to be graded for the past two weeks. This weekend please have your child read from the Raz-Kids Books. These are books that are ONLINE and LEVELED for their reading ability. There are multiple ways your child can access Raz-Kids: Website: http://www.raz-kids.com/main/Login Apps (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon): http://www.raz-kids.com/main/ViewPage/name/tc-mobile/context/teachercorner Teacher Username is: legacyc109 OR ghes5 You child should know which username they use. If not, have them try either one and look for THEIR NAME. Please encourage your child to use this resources provided to use by the PTA (thats you!). ![]() Without a doubt I can honestly say we in room C109 have the best classes! I am so impressed with their continued drive to explore, create, and collaborate with each other. Today we created Kahoots! in class about the Civil Rights Movement. There is a quiz tomorrow, and learners in our class had to critically think to create questions that would help them learn and challenge their peers! The most awesome thing was learners were activity engaged with the curriculum and subject matter! That is really cool!
We also met in our differentiated centers to discuss Love That Dog and further cement the ideals of Figurative Language. Again I was impressed with the conversations I had with learners in my groups today. Many learners who had never thought about poetry and figurative language are thinking about it in a whole new way. Thank you for your continued support at home. Don't forget we have SS Quiz, Vocabulary Quiz, and learners have 3 more poems due tomorrow. ![]() I am very proud of the readers we have in our classes. Keep reading and I know we will make the goals we have set and accomplish are reading desires! Today we finished "Love That Dog" and students were moved by the ending. We will continue to discuss the book, authors craft, and figurative language throughout the rest of the week.
In Social Studies we looked at Civil Rights Leaders (MLK, Rosa Parks, JFK, and Malcom X). The goal was to understand the strategies of the leaders discussed and how they were used. A book I have kept my eye on has been "Wendell: The World's Worst Wizard". The concept interests me. Currently the book has dropped to $0.99 for Kindle (and other eBook options). If you think the book would be of interest to your child, or you wanted to try out reading a book via eBook, you might want to try this out. I have NOT read it yet, but I did buy it, and plan to read soon. Enjoy the great weather! ![]() After 6 days of Snow and Holiday breaks it was good to be back in class and I can honestly say "Everything is Awesome." We covered a lot of ground today starting with the Background to the Civil Rights Movement with a focus on Plessy vs Ferguson and Brown vs Board of Education. We continued our reading of Love That Dog as the main character, Jack, reads what he considers the BEST poem ever. Hyperbole is our focus of Figurative Language this week and continued study of simile, metaphor, synonyms, antonyms, and homographs. Learners were also given three more poems they are working on over the course of the week. Please remember to have your child reading every night and continue to work on their Black History Month Projects. And don't Forget: ![]() Its been a great week of new experiences in Tega Cay, South Carolina, but we return to class Tuesday, February 18 and I want to remind you of what needs to be accomplished by then:
